Local Chapters of the Virginia Writers Club

The Virginia Writers Club strives to support local writers with peer critiques of their work, networking opportunities and speakers to further their knowledge af the art and craft of writing.

At present, the VWC has ten active local Chapters: Blue Ridge, Chesapeake Bay Writers, Hampton Roads, Hanover Writers, James-York, Northern Virginia, Richmond, Riverside, Traveler, and Valley.

The Blue Ridge Chapter serves the cities of Charlottesville, Staunton and Waynesboro,and counties of Albemarle, Augusta, Fluvana, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, Orange and Rappahannock. Meetings are held at the Barnes and Noble book store in the Barracks Road Shopping Center the third Wednesday of every month except March (Virginia Festival of the Book Month) and August. The Chesapeake Bay Writers Chapter serves the City of Williamsburg and the counties of Charles City, Essex, Gloucester, James City, King & Queen, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Richmond and Westmoreland. The Chesapeake Bay Writers host five luncheon or dinner meetings each year. In addition, the Chapter offers recurrent workshops and outreach events which afford members opportunities to exchange ideas and establish contact with others having similar interests. Individual members also host various critique and novel reading groups which meet regularly at different times and locations to assist members in achieving their writing goals. The Hampton Roads Chapter serves the cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach. Meetings are held the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center in Virginia Beach. The Hanover Writers Chapter meets the third Saturday of each month from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon, at the Mechanicsville Library, 7179 Stonewall Parkway, Mechanicsville. Anyone interested in writing is invited to join this group. Activities include topics of discussion, speakers, workshops, and critiquing. For further information, please email Joanne Liggan.

The James-York Chapter serves York County (including Jamestown and Yorktown), Poquoson, Hampton and Newport News. Meetings are held the third Saturday of each month at the Tabb Library, 100 Long Green Boulevard, from 1:30 p.m. For further information, please e-mail Dorene Braun.

The Northern Virginia Chapter serves writers in the counties of Fairfax and Arlington, the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church, and the surrounding areas. The Chapter meets the third Sunday of each month at the Tysons-Pimmit Library, 7584 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church. For further information, please email a Chapter representative.

The Richmond Chapter serves the City of Richmond and surrounding areas, including the counties of Chesterfield, Henrico and Hanover. Meetings are held at 6:30 PM in the conference room of the Westover Hills Library on the third Wednesday of the month. For further information, please e-mail Susan Schwartz.

The Riverside Writers Chapter serves the City of Fredericksburg and counties of Caroline, King George, Louisa, Spotsylvania, Stafford and portions of the adjoining areas. Meetings are held the second Saturday of each month at the C. Melvin Snow Memorial branch of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. For further information, please e-mail Diane Parkinson.

The Traveler Chapter serves the cities of Chester, Colonial Heights, Emporia, Franklin, Hopewell, Petersburg, Smithfield and Suffolk, and the counties of Brunswick, Dinwiddie, Greenville, Halifax, Isle of Wight, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottaway, Prince Edward, Prince George, Southampton Surry and Sussex. Meetings are held at 11:00 a.m. the second Saturday of each month, at the Enon Library in Chester. For further information, please e-mail Joseph Fleming.

The Valley Writers Chapter serves the City of Roanoke and surrounding areas. Meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. the first and third Thursdays at the St. Thomas of Canterbury Anglican Church, corner of Hershberger and Hubert Roads in Roanoke. Visitors are welcome.
