Prince William County Announces OCTOBER 11 is "Poets Laureate Day: U.S. Secretary of Education Sends Greetings
Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart proclaimed October 11 "Poets Laureate Day" in recognition of the In the Company of Laureates event on October 11 at the Hylton Center in Manassas,Virginia. In the proclamation, Supervisor Stewart extends a "warm welcome to the celebrated community of writers who will visit Prince William County"to participate in and attend In the Company of Laureates.
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has sent a letter of greeting to the gathering, which will be read from the stage at the opening of the event. In it, Secretary Duncan expresses his support for "a well-rounded curriculum that includes the arts." Virginia teachers will receive 5 re-certification points for attending the event.
A dozen plus creative writing students from Woodbridge Senior High School's Center for the Fine and Performing Arts have joined the cast of characters, each assuming the persona of his or her favorite United States or state Poet Laureate. The students will be roaming throughout the Hylton Center, stopping to share a fact or favorite poem.
In the Company of Laureates is co-hosted by the Poetry Society of Virginia and Write by the Rails, the Prince William Chapter of the Virginia Writers Club.
Join more than 20 current and former Poets Laureate from Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia in celebration of American poetry. In the Company of Laureates takes place from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. on October 11 at the Hylton Center for the Performing Arts on George Mason University’s Science and Technology Campus in Manassas. Meet and mingle with the Laureates and other regional poets and enthusiasts. Workshops, panel discussions, open mics and more. Teen program and activities throughout the event.
